Overview
Whitney Portal Campground is located 12 miles west of Lone Pine at the foot of Mt. Whitney. Many visitors to the campsite have ambitions to summit 14,505-foot Mt. Whitney, the tallest peak in the lower 48 states. The trailhead is about a ½ mile from the campground
Whitney Portal Campground offers a total of 43 campsites and the majority can be reserved, but some sites are designated first-come, first-served. Campsites are situated among trees, shrubs, and boulders and many sites don’t have very much shade.
The campground is located in the Eastern Sierra Nevada mountain range, along the banks of Lone Pine Creek and amidst a lovely pine forest.
There are drinking water and vault toilets in the campground. Firewood can also be purchased from the campground.
Within a mile, there is also a camp store and restaurant, and the nearby Whitney Portal Store allows hot showers for $7.
The campsites are ideal for tents, and a couple of them can accommodate smaller trailers and RVs up to 22 feet. Cell service is spotty and you might have to go to Whitney Portal Road for service. Pets are allowed on a leash and always attended, and the campground is open from

- Talk an easy stroll around Alabama Hills, the backdrop of many movies like Gladiator, Django Unchained, Iron Man, Firefly, and Man of Steel.
- If you’re feeling energetic, you can hike a section of the Mt Whitney trail.
- Visit Horseshoe Meadow and walk into Cottonwood Lakes for the day.
- Spend the day swimming and fishing at Rock Creek Lake's beach area.
- Take a drive up north and visit one of the many hot springs between Lone Pine and Mammoth Lakes along highway 395.
- Go fishing for trout in Bishop Creek, as well as adjacent Lake Sabrina and South Lake.
- Drive about an hour north and visit Bishop for a plethora of shops, cafes, and restaurants.

NoReservations are accepted whenever the campground is open and can be made from 4 days up to 6 months in advance of the arrival date. You can pay for up to four reservations at once using the same credit card.
You’ll need to reserve at least three nights on holiday weekends. The reservation fee per day is $28 and reservations can be made online at Recreation.gov or by calling 760-937-6070.
Before you make your reservation, make sure you have the following information to make a reservation:

- Number of people that will occupy the campsite
- Number of nights you wish to camp

Group Camping Reservations
Three tent-only group campsites are located directly to the west of the main campground. Each site allows for up to 15 people and 2 vehicles. No RVs, campers, or trailers are allowed. Reservations can be made 4 days to a year of your arrival date, and each night costs $85.
Campsite Reservation Cancellations
There is a cancellation fee of $10 plus whatever reservation charges you incurred when you made the booking. In addition, late cancellation of the first night’s fee will be charged if you cancel 1 calendar day before your arrival.

Nearby Campgrounds to Whitney Portal Campground
Lone Pine Campground
Lone Pine Campground is located six miles west of Lone Pine while Whitney Portal is a ways further at 12 miles in. With 43 campsites, this campground is about the same size as Whitney Portal Campground. Both campgrounds have no hookups or showers.
The maximum RV or trailer length is 30 feet at Lone Pine which is more than Whitney Portal’s 22 feet limit. All sites cost $26 per night at Lone Pine Campground while at Whitney Portal they cost $28.
Grays Meadows Campground
Located on Onion Valley Road in the Inyo National Forest, Grays Meadows Campground and its 87 sites are way larger than Whitney Portal’s 43 campsites. The maximum RV or trailer length is 34 feet which is more than Whitney Portal’s 22-foot limit.
Grays Meadows Campground charges $25 a night which is a little less than the $28 fee at Whitney Portal. Like Whitney Portal, Grays Meadows Campground doesn’t have any hookups, showers, or dump stations.
Onion Valley Campground
Onion Valley Campground is located 14 miles west of Independence in the Inyo National Forest at the end of Onion Valley Road. With 30 campsites, this campground is smaller than Whitney Portal Campground. Whitney Portal also has group campsites that allow for up to 15 people, while Onion Valley Campground doesn’t have any group camping facility.
Both campgrounds have no hookups. The maximum RV and trailer length is 16 feet at Onion Valley Campground which is less than Whitney Portal’s 22 feet limit. All sites cost $22 per night at Onion Valley Campground while at Whitney Portal they cost $28.
Upper Stony Creek Campground
Upper Stony Creek Campground is located on the northern side of Hume Lake, at an elevation of 5,250 feet, among Douglas Firs and Jeffrey Pines. Upper Stony Brook has 17 campsites along the creek which is less than the 43 campsites available at the Whitney Portal.
The maximum RV and trailer length at Upper Stony Creek Campground is 35 feet which is more than the 22 feet at Whitney Portal Campground. There are vault toilets, picnic spaces, and drinking water available at both campgrounds.
