Overview
New Shady Rest Campground is located in Inyo National Forest close to Mammoth Lakes. It features 92 sites that can accommodate trailers, RVs, and tents. No hookups or cabins are available. The campground is open seasonally from the end of May through the end of October.
Amenities include flush toilets, potable water, fire rings, a pay-per-use dump station, and bear boxes for food. Although showers are not available in the campground itself, there are paid showers available at nearby Mammoth Mountain RV Park for $8.
New Shady Rest doesn’t have a group campsite of its own, but there are some available in other campgrounds spread throughout Inyo National Forest. Dogs are allowed in both the campground and the forest.

YesReservations are available through www.recreation.gov and include a nonrefundable $10 booking fee. Guests must book at least 2 nights to stay on a Friday or Saturday or 3 nights over a holiday weekend.
Sites are $28 per night or $30 on holidays. All of them can accommodate up to 2 vehicles and 6 people. There is a length limit of 36 feet at the largest sites.
Group Camping Reservations
There are no group campsites at New Shady Rest Campground. Adjacent individual sites can be booked together to be used as a shared space, but all reservation requirements for standard campsites apply. Most sites have trees in between, which may make it difficult to move between neighboring sites.
Campsite Reservation Cancellations
Cancellation requests must be submitted through www.recreation.gov. All requests will be charged a $10 fee and forfeit the initial booking fee. Late cancellations that occur after midnight the calendar day before the start of a reservation will be charged the cost of one night in the campground.

Nearby Campgrounds to New Shady Rest Campground
New Shady Rest Campground is far from the most luxurious, but it has a solid set of amenities that can make even a multi-week stay comfortable for most guests. With potable water and a dump station in the campground, the main drawback is the lack of electric hookups.
The dump station and nearby showers are pay per use, so costs can add up for guests who are relying on those amenities. However, this is still more convenient than neighboring campgrounds that lack easy access to a dump station without having to travel to another part of the national forest.
The sites at New Shady Rest can accommodate up to 6 people, so larger groups may be more comfortable elsewhere. It’s also notable that there is no formal group site at this location.
Pine Glen Campground
Pine Glen Campground is located in the same forest as New Shady Rest. In addition to 9 individual sites, there are 2 group sites for up to 15 people and 6 group sites for up to 30 people. The smaller group site is $66 per night, while the larger site is $132.
Amenities include flush toilets, picnic tables, fire rings, and trash. Paid showers and a pay-per-use dump station are located nearby outside of the campground proper.
Old Shady Rest Campground
Old Shady Rest isn’t far from Pine Glen and New Shady Rest. The campground offers 45 individual sites for $28 per night. Amenities include flush toilets, bear boxes, fire rings, and picnic tables. Paid showers and a dump station are nearby.
Sherwin Creek Campground
Although it’s located in the same forest, Sherwin Creek is more remote than other campgrounds in Inyo National Forest. There are 70 individual sites available, but amenities are somewhat more limited and only include vault toilets, water, and trash. There are also 15 hike-in sites available for guests who are interested in staying out closer to nature.
Twin Lakes Campground
Twin Lakes is located in Inyo National Forest but has more amenities than New Shady Rest. The campground is situated along Twin Lake and offers 93 individual sites for $29 per night. Amenities include fire rings, picnic tables, flush toilets, and drinking water. There’s also a general store that rents boats, sells firewood, and offers paid showers. Guests who enjoy boating, water sports, and fishing may prefer to stay at Twin Lakes compared to New Shady Rest.
Lake Mary Campground
Lake Mary is close to Twin Lakes, and it’s among the most popular of the surrounding lakes. There are 48 sites available within the campground. Amenities include flush toilets, trash, water, and fuel sales, but it doesn’t have a dump station on site. Due to its proximity to the water, this can be a better location for guests who enjoy fishing and water sports.
Coldwater Campground
Coldwater Campground in Inyo National Forest offers 74 individual sites. Amenities include flush toilets, bear boxes, water, and trash. This campground is close to Lake Mary and several fishing areas. It does not have a dump station or extra parking.
