FAQs
Nearby Campgrounds to Hendy Woods State Park Campground
Hendy Woods State Park Campground is set in a forest environment with activities such hiking, swimming, and exploring the redwood groves. However, there is no beach or ocean access, and fishing is not allowed.
Camping amenities are a balance between the luxury of full hookups and primitive camping. With a dump station, water, and showers, it’s easy to manage longer stays at Hendy Woods. The price of $45 per night for standard sites is higher than many surrounding campgrounds. Guests can also stay at cabins, which are a unique feature of Hendy Woods.
For disabled guests, this campground offers 120-volt electric connections at multiple sites, accessible restrooms, an ADA-accessible cabin, and a wheelchair-friendly trail. This distinguishes Hendy Woods as especially conscious about accessibility compared to many of the campgrounds and parks in California.
Bushay Recreation Area Campground
Bushay Recreation Area is open from late May through early September. It has over 100 sites, and amenities include water, showers, flush toilets, a dump station, and a playground. There is also a staging area for horses and a single site with electric and water hookups. Bushay Recreation Area also has three group sites for those traveling in larger numbers, which makes this campground more group-friendly than Hendy Woods. Lake Mendocino is great for swimming and water sports. It also allows fishing, which is not permitted at Hendy Woods, so anglers will have a much better experience at Bushay Recreation Area.
Van Damme State Park
Van Damme State Park Campground is the same price as Hendy Woods. It also offers hike-in camping in an area with redwoods, a group site, and a small selection of tent-only sites. This provides more variety for traditional camping than at Hendy Woods, which only offers the hike-and-bike site, cabins, and standard sites. Van Damme has access to tide pools and sea caves along the beach, but swimming in the ocean can be dangerous in this area. Guests who are hoping to swim may be better served at Hendy Woods where they can enjoy the Navarro River instead.
Russian Gulch State Park
Russian Gulch’s campground is smaller than the one at Hendy Woods, but it also includes corrals for equestrians and a group site that can fit up to 40 people. This may make it more enticing for groups. Sites are $35 per night, or roughly 22 percent cheaper than at Hendy Woods per night.
Amenities are similar, but Russian Gulch doesn’t have cabins. Guests with dogs may prefer Russian Gulch since this park allows dogs on trails and the beach west of Highway 1. At Hendy Woods, dogs are limited to the campground and day-use areas.
