FAQs
Nearby Campgrounds to Barton Flats Campground
Barton Flats is similar to campgrounds within the same park but differs significantly from camping options in other parts of California. Due to the proximity to the ocean, many campgrounds are next to the beach with trails leading down to the water.
Barton Flats is also fairly basic in terms of amenities, so campers who prefer hookups or facilities like a camp store would be better served elsewhere. The same is true for those who are traveling in large groups since Barton Flats can only accommodate 16 guests at its double sites.
San Gorgonio Campground
San Gorgonio is located in the same park as Barton Flats, so the campground layouts and surrounding environments are quite similar. This campground features 54 mixed-use sites for RVs and tents. Three double sites can accommodate smaller groups. The season for San Gorgonio is slightly shorter than at Barton Flats since the former is only open from late April through late September.
Pineknot Campground
Pineknot Campground is also located in San Bernardino National Forest and shares a similar schedule to Barton Flats. Pineknot offers 47 sites for tents or RVs, but the terrain is not as RV-friendly as it is as Barton Flats. Amenities include picnic tables, campfire rings/grills, flush toilets, and drinking water. There is no dump station.
South Carlsbad State Beach
South Carlsbad State Beach has a much different setting since the campground is situated on bluffs overlooking the ocean. This campground is much larger than Barton Flats, offering over 200 sites for tents and RVs. A limited number of sites have full or double hookups starting at rates of $60 and $100, respectively. Sites along the ocean are more expensive. The Pelican Point group site can fit up to 40 people for $650 per night.
Carpinteria State Beach
Carpinteria is located on a beach instead of within a forest like at Barton Flats. The campground offers full hookups at nearly 200 campsites. Amenities include showers, a dump station, a visitor’s center, a camp store, and summer programs. Carpinteria also differs from Barton Flats because of its numerous group sites. The campground has seven separate group sites that can fit 25–40 guests each starting at a cost of $180 for the smallest sites.
