FAQs
Nearby Campgrounds to Abalone Campground (Sue-Meg)
With restrooms, showers, and a dump station, Abalone strikes a happy medium between primitive camping and luxuries like hookups. Pricing is affordable even in the summer, and sites can accommodate tents and small RVs. With a length limit of 31 feet, even guests with larger trailers and RVs can fit at Abalone.
The group site is distinct because it offers showers, restrooms, and running water in the cooking area at a reasonable rate of $300. It can fit 50 guests and 21 vehicles, making it among the larger group sites in this area. However, it can’t accommodate horses, so equestrians should seek out a designated horse camp.
Lastly, dogs are not allowed in the park itself. Other parks and national forests throughout the region allow dogs in day-use areas or on some trails and beaches, so guests who prefer to enjoy the outdoors with their pets would be better served elsewhere.
Penn Creek Campground
Penn Creek is also located in Sue-meg State Park. This small campground has 15 tent-only sites. The amenities are similar to Agate and Abalone, but none of the campsites are ADA-accessible. Penn Creek is also much closer to the Visitor Center for guests who enjoy exhibits and programs.
Agate Campground
Agate Campground is located in the same park as Abalone. It’s smaller than Abalone and features 39 standard sites and 4 cabins. The ADA-accessible cabins are $80 per night and come with an electric heater for guests who prefer more traditional accommodations. Guests at Agate can use the dump station by Abalone, but it’s a longer drive to get there.
Gold Bluffs Beach
Gold Bluffs Beach is open all year but does not accept reservations. No trailers are allowed, and RVs are limited to 24 feet, which will be prohibitively short for many motorhomes. There is no dump station on site. There is one pull-through-accessible campsite located next to the ADA-accessible restrooms and shower area. Gold Bluffs Beach does not have a group site.
Fish Lake Campground
Fish Lake Campground does not have access to the ocean, but campers can access three rivers and Fish Lake for water sports, swimming, and fishing. Since the water by Abalone Campground is cold and dangerous for swimming, Fish Lake is the better option for guests who consider swimming and water sports to be essential. There are no showers at Fish Lake, and the only amenities are water and vault toilets. Nightly rates are much cheaper at $10 per night.
